This new North American headquarters for Zurich blurs the distinction between exterior and interior spaces through the use of glass, open floor plans and numerous green roofs which become a continuation of the grassy plain surrounding the building as they wrap up onto the structure. The approach prioritizes arrival by car while the organization of the site and orientation of the building are informed by ease of access onto and around the campus. Two parking areas of three levels each are located below grade. Access to the below-grade lobby, common to both garages, is clearly visible from anywhere in the interior. The lobby itself is at the bottom of an atrium, open at the top to the main lobby and reception area. Curved open staircases connect the levels. Open spaces are orienting features, both visually and, by virtue of an audible water wall, aurally.
