A new headquarters for the e-commerce division of Newell Brands was created in the historic Empire Stores in Dumbo. The design allows for maximum flexibility within the very rigid historic structure. The old coffee bean storage facility’s wood columns and wood ceilings were stripped down to their original condition. The original stone load- bearing walls serve to organize the floor plan and the portals allow users to pass by each wall in a very intentional way. Simple steel frame glass partitions were introduced into the space to create more intimate offices and conference rooms. The remainder of the space was treated with custom modular furniture pieces. A winding modular desk system curves around the columnar plan, and geometric seating groups populate the floor intentionally to sponsor collaboration and communication.
